SOX2 is a member of the large family of sex determining region Y-related HMG-box (SOX) transcription factors. SOX2 is expressed in embryonic stem cell lines, and decreased levels of SOX2 interfere with self renewal and pluripotency. SOX2 has been identified as one of the key regulators for induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. The DNA binding domain (AA 41-109) shows significant homology to other SOX family members, while the N-terminal (AA 1-38) and C-terminal (AA 194-317) regions are unique. The Sox2 gene itself contains no introns but lies within an intron of the SOX2 overlapping transcript (SOX2OT) gene.
